Summary / Responsibilities / Goals
You will be a core member of our software engineering organization, responsible for building and evolving the company’s mobile-first platform strategy. Today, this role is primarily focused on native Android development for mission-critical mobile applications that integrate with IoT devices, real-time telemetry, and cloud data platforms. But this is not a “maintain the current app forever” role. A central part of this position is to actively investigate, evaluate, and help shape our future mobile architecture, including a full refactoring to include Flutter, React Native, and/or other cross-platform and hybrid approaches. You will partner with product, backend, and platform teams to determine where native remains the right choice; and where cross-platform approaches can accelerate delivery without compromising quality, performance, or security.
Native Android Engineering
- Design, build, and maintain high-quality native Android applications
- Implement clean, testable, and maintainable code using modern Android patterns
- Integrate mobile apps with REST APIs, real-time data services, and IoT telemetry
- Optimize performance, reliability, and security across the application lifecycle
- Participate in code reviews and set a high bar for mobile engineering quality
Cross-Platform & Architecture Evolution
- Actively investigate and prototype React Native, Flutter, and other mobile frameworks
- Evaluate tradeoffs between native and cross-platform approaches
- Help define long-term mobile architecture strategy
- Build proof-of-concepts and technical recommendations for leadership
- Influence platform decisions that will shape mobile development for years
Delivery & Collaboration
- Partner closely with Product Managers, UX/UI Designers, Backend Engineers, and QA
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, sprint planning, and backlog refinement
- Collaborate with DevOps on CI/CD pipelines and Play Store release management
- Support automated and manual testing strategies for mobile applications
What Success Looks Like (First 6–9 Months)
- Core Android applications are stable, performant, and trusted by users
- New features ship predictably and with high quality
- Clear recommendations exist for when to use native vs. React Native vs. Flutter
- One or more cross-platform prototypes or pilots are successfully delivered
- Mobile architecture is more consistent, documented, and scalable
- You are recognized as a technical leader in our mobile strategy
Why This Role Is Compelling
- You will build mission-critical mobile software, not consumer toys while influencing the future mobile architecture of the company. You will work across native, cross-platform, cloud, and IoT systems. You will have real technical ownership and architectural voice. The work directly supports environmental and public health outcomes. The platform you help shape will matter for years.
